730Days sober
MilestoneYear 2

Two years.

Two years of choosing differently. The first year was about establishing the new baseline. The second year is about what you do with it.

  • What is different now

Year one is reactive. You spent it managing the absence of a thing that used to take up space. Year two is generative. You spent it doing things that the year-one version of you would not have had the bandwidth for. The cognitive load that drinking and recovering from drinking used to consume is now available for something else. What you put in that space is the part of your life that exists because of the choice you made two years ago.

  • What stays the same

The decision still needs to be made every day. The mechanism for making it gets quieter, but it does not go away. People who hit year five and year ten will tell you that the work of being sober becomes less effortful, never zero-effort.

A note

Two years is enough to know the answer to most of the questions you had at day thirty. It is not enough to be done. You are not done.
